Officer fatally shoots Elgin, Ore., man

ELGIN, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say a police officer fatally shot a 60-year-old Elgin man after responding to a reported domestic disturbance at a home in the northeast Oregon town. State police Lt. Gregg Hastings says the unidentified Elgin officer encountered a 60-year-old man holding a rifle early Monday. Hastings says the officer fired at least one round from his handgun. Richard Lee Shafer was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer was uninjured and is on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated by the Union County major crimes team.

No other details were immediately released.
