INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The IndyCar Series will run its final race in Japan on the road course because the egg-shaped oval track has too much damage from the March earthquakes.
Twin Ring Motegi is scheduled to host its final IndyCar race Sept. 18. The track is located north of Tokyo.
Series CEO Randy Bernard says track officials will hold the race after “closely monitoring” the damage for months. The track is owned by Mobilityland Corp., a motor unit of Honda.
Raised ridges on the 1.5-mile oval track’s surface have made it unusable for the race. That prompted the move to the 2.98-mile natural terrain road course.
Track officials announced this year that this will be the final race in Japan. Motegi has hosted IndyCar events since 2003.
