TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — The music director at Lincoln High School in Tacoma says black and Hispanic students were so divided in the early days of the drum line team they were ready to kill each other.

Music director Peter Briggs said some individual players only wanted to show off. Less experienced players were humiliated and driven out of class.

That was two years ago.

The News Tribune reports misfits and showoffs have been transformed into a group whose rhythm and moves now bring audiences to their feet.

Briggs says he showed the students what was possible then let student leaders emerge.

The drum line is performing Friday night at the Hip Hop Arts Showcase at the school.
