BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Fly fishing shops nationwide are at the center of the latest hair trend: Feather extensions.
From the coasts of Maine to landlocked Idaho, supplies of fly fishing hackle are running out and some feathers sold online are fetching hundreds of dollars more than the usual prices.
Jim Bernstein at Eldredge Bros. Fly Shop in Maine says he was warned that hair stylists would come banging on his door for the long, skinny rooster feathers fisherman use to make lure, but he didn’t listen. Now, he wishes he had.
The craze has also left hairstylists scrambling to find the feathers, as fly shops hold onto a select few for their regular customers.
At MiraBella Salon and Spa in Boise, owner Shelley Ambroz stowed away enough feathers to last about six months.
