DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Rory McIlroy had an even-par 72 in the second round of the Memorial that was anything but steady and didn’t feature many pars until he finally settled into his round. He at least finished atop the leaderboard among early starters Friday.
McIlroy looked brilliant at times by making six birdies, giving him 13 through two rounds at Muirfield Village. He also had four bogeys and a sloppy double bogey on the 14th hole.
Even so, it put him at 6-under 136 with Ricky Barnes (70), Jonathan Byrd (67) and the resurgent Rod Pampling (66), who is coming off consecutive top 10s in Texas.
Pampling, who lost his PGA Tour card, had to get a sponsor’s exemption to play in the Memorial.
Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson were among those playing in the afternoon.
