COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin is reassuring Ohio State fans that things will get better.
The 56-year-old Griffin is president and CEO of Ohio State’s alumni association, and 36 years removed from becoming the only player to win college football’s most coveted individual award for a second time. He believes the football program will rebuild in the wake of Jim Tressel’s forced resignation Monday.
Another Heisman winner — this one from archrival Michigan — said it’s premature to guess at the Buckeyes’ future. Desmond Howard believes it may be difficult to hire a replacement coach after the 2011 season if Ohio State is hit by additional NCAA sanctions.
Meanwhile, many of the university’s top donors are remaining loyal.
