RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — An eighth case of a highly infectious and deadly horse virus has been confirmed in Washington state.
The Tri-City Herald reports that Washington State University veterinarians confirmed that a horse euthanized at the College of Veterinary Medicine tested positive for equine herpes virus, or EHV-1.
School veterinarians say that the horse was not euthanized because of the virus, but rather for an existing lameness. The horse had not shown signs of the virus. But veterinarians tested the horse’s lung tissue and found the virus.
The new find restarts the college’s isolation procedures. It will shut its doors to animal checkups for three weeks.
