CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — The Calgary Flames have hired former NHL head coach Craig Hartsburg as an associate coach.

Hartsburg and Flames coach Brent Sutter have a long relationship in hockey. Hartsburg was Sutter’s assistant coach on Canada’s junior men’s team that won gold in 2006.

At the end of Sutter’s NHL career, when he played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Hartsburg was his coach from 1995-98. They were also Canadian teammates in the 1987 Canada Cup.

Hartsburg, a longtime NHL defenseman, has been head coach of Chicago, the Anaheim Ducks (1998-2001) and the Ottawa Senators (2008-09). He was also an assistant coach with the Minnesota North Stars and twice with the Philadelphia Flyers during his career.
