A 20-year-man nearly drowned in Vancouver Lake on Sunday afternoon before being rescued by friends and family.

Vancouver Firefighter Kevin Stromberg said onlookers saw the man struggling in the water and were able to reach him before he lost consciousness. Stromberg said the man swallowed a lot of water.

The accident happened at 4:54 p.m.

The man, whose name was not released because of privacy laws, was treated and then transported to a local hospital by American Medical Response. His condition was considered stable, Stromberg said

Stromberg said he believed cold water was a factor in the accident.

“Our water is still very cold and we should be extra cautious,” Stromberg said.

Seven Vancouver firefighters responded to the incident.
