BAGHDAD (AP) — The general secretary of the Iraqi Football Association says elections for the group’s governing body that were to be held Tuesday have been delayed until Friday.
Tariq Ahmed told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the association is trying to address concerns raised by FIFA, the sport’s world governing body.
FIFA said in a letter Monday that it was concerned about attempts to bar some candidates from running in the elections because of ties to Saddam Hussein’s regime.
They also raised concerns about making sure all the candidates and observers were protected. Ahmed said the association promised FIFA to take all measures to hold smooth elections.
After Iraq failed to elect a new soccer head last year, FIFA gave the country another year to work out its problems.
