MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) — Skagit Publishing has named Heather Hernandez as its new publisher, replacing Stedem Wood.

Hernandez is currently the advertising director at The Roanoke Times in Virginia and previously held management positions at The San Diego Union-Tribune and the Statesman Journal in Salem, Ore.

Skagit Publishing publishes the Skagit Valley Herald in Mount Vernon and three weeklies in Skagit County.

The Skagit Valley Herald reported Tuesday that Hernandez would take over in July. Wood announced in March that he was stepping down after 20 years heading the family-owned newspaper. Wood remains on the board of Pioneer Newspapers, Inc., which owns several community dailies and weeklies throughout the Northwest.

Hernandez has ties to Skagit County through her parents who retired to Anacortes.
