SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The latest round of budget cuts in the Salem-Keizer School District will cost 46 Oregon teachers their jobs.

The Statesman Journal reports the cuts are part of the effort to offset a $54 million budget shortfall.

But Assistant Superintendent Mary Cadez told the newspaper the district hopes the latest round will be the last.

Next fall, the Salem-Keizer district will open schools with 248 fewer teaching positions and larger class sizes across the board.

In all, the district cut 420 positions — including support staff, administrators and teachers.
