MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (AP) — Two-time world super featherweight champion Genaro Hernandez has died at his home in Mission Viejo, Calif. He was 45.

Hernandez’s wife, Liliana Hernandez, says he died Tuesday of a rare cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma (RAB’-doh-MY’-oh-sar-KOH’-muh) that attacks muscle fibers.

Hernandez began his professional career in the mid-1980s in South Los Angeles.

He was WBA super featherweight champion from 1991 to 1994 and WBC super featherweight champion from 1997 to 1998.

In addition to his wife, Hernandez is survived by his son, Steven; his daughter, Amanda; three brothers; two sisters; and his father.
