DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Florida’s Jeff Demps and LSU’s Semoy Hackett, both among the favorites in the 100 meters, failed to get through preliminary heats Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor track and field championships.

Demps, a football star for the Gators and the defending outdoor champion in the 100 meters, was just 14th out of 24 qualifiers and third in his heat in 10.40 seconds.

LSU’s Semoy Hackett pulled up short in her qualifying meet and finished in a disappointing 11.55.

The championships, which are back in Des Moines for this year and 2012, kicked off with a light schedule Wednesday that included finals in women’s 10,000 and selected field events.
