SAO PAULO (AP) — Former Brazilian basketball player Oscar Schmidt says he is recovering well from brain surgery to remove a benign tumor.

Oscar says he was “lucky” doctors found the near 3-inch tumor that could have caused long-term consequences to his health if it had not been removed.

The 53-year-old Oscar told the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper on Thursday that he probably had the tumor for a long time. Doctors ordered tests after he passed out in a bath tub during a trip to the United States.

The tumor was removed two weeks ago in Sao Paulo.

Oscar led Brazil to an improbable gold medal in the 1987 Pan American Games, stunning the United States in the final.
