SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres are the first team to reach an agreement with their first-round draft pick.

The Padres announced Friday they had agreed to terms with 20-year-old second baseman Cory Spangenberg, who spent a year at Virginia Military Institute before transferring to Indian River State College. Spangenberg was the 10th overall selection in Monday’s draft.

Spangenberg took batting practice before San Diego hosted Washington on Friday night. The former Pennsylvania prep star says he can’t wait to start playing again.
