FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Alex Mayer won the men’s 10-kilometer race at the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships on Friday, while Eva Fabian survived the choppy ocean waters to win the women’s event.

Mayer, from Cambridge, Mass., finished in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 36 seconds, just two seconds ahead of Sean Ryan of Chattanooga, Tenn. Both of them earned spots at the world championships, to be held in Shanghai in July.

Fabian, of Keene, N.H., won the women’s race in 2:18:31. Christine Jennings of Longmont, Colo., finished second in 2:18:33. They also advanced to worlds.
