BEND, Ore. (AP) — A hiker who injured his ankle and tried to crawl 100 feet during several hours finally gave in and called 911.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office reports 23-year-old Cameron Gaertner started hiking at about 4:30 p.m. near Boyd Cave. Two hours later, Gaertner rolled his ankle.

Without a flashlight and underdressed for the falling temperatures, Gaertner and a hiking partner called the police.

Five deputies were dispatched to the scene. Gaertner was taken from the cave area by ground ambulance.
