SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Gov. John Kitzhaber has signed a bill implementing new legislative districts.
Kitzhaber signed the bill on Monday and praised it as a historic bipartisan compromise. The Legislature hasn’t successfully created new legislative districts in decades.
The compromise plan is based largely on the existing plan. It reflects the state’s shifting population by increasing clout in the Portland suburbs and in Bend at the expense of eastern Oregon and the coast.
The state is required to draw new boundaries every 10 years.
Lawmakers are still working on drawing new boundaries for Oregon’s U.S. House districts.
