CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Organizers of the “Rose Bowl” of college rodeos have been taking precautions to prevent the spread of a highly contagious horse virus.

The College National Finals Rodeo opened Sunday in Casper. It attracts teams from more than 100 colleges from around the nation and Canada.

Officials told the Casper Star-Tribune that they didn’t find any problems as contestants checked in in the days leading up to opening day.

A new case was reported last week in Montana but the outbreak seems to have slowed in recent weeks.

Various other horse events, including rodeos and competitions in Oklahoma, Nevada, Colorado, Washington and Kansas, were canceled or delayed because of the Equine Herpes Virus-1.

The college rodeo continues through Saturday.
