Doug Moe’s June 6 letter, “Christianity part of nation’s history,” criticizes our president for saying “we are no longer just a Christian nation,” and asks, “How could anyone become president of this great nation and be so ignorant of its history?” The key word in the president’s statement is “just,” and he is correct. Though Christianity has played a significant part of our history, we are today a nation of multiple religions and faiths.
Although I am a Christian myself, I understand quite clearly that freedom of religion cannot exist for what I believe unless it also exists for that which I do not believe. I ask Moe to look around at the full diversity of the citizens in our country today, and ask himself, “How could anyone live in this great nation today and be so ignorant of its current religious diversity?” Tolerance is not a weakness; it is a strength.
