KHAR, Pakistan (AP) — A government official says more than 200 militants who crossed into Pakistan from Afghanistan attacked a border village, killing five people.

Sajid Khan says the militants attacked the village in the Bajur tribal region early Thursday morning using mortars, rockets and machine guns. He says the Pakistani military responded from a nearby base and fighting was ongoing.

Khan, a senior government official in the area, says the dead included three women and two men and that many others were wounded.

Militants from Afghanistan staged a similar attack earlier this month in Pakistan’s Upper Dir district.
