Bend OR park district won’t kill geese this year

BEND, Ore. (AP) — Fewer Canada geese are hanging out in Bend, Ore., parks this year so the local park district says it doesn’t plan to kill any. Instead it’s working with a federal wildlife agency to band the adult geese to monitor their movements. Juvenile geese will be relocated to a wildlife refuge.

KTVZ says last spring’s lethal gassing of more than 100 Canada geese drew criticism from animal lovers, even prompting a memorial service for the departed birds.

On Wednesday, the Bend Metro Park and Recreation District promised “no lethal management of geese this year.”

The U.S. Agriculture Department’s Wildlife Services and the park district have worked with Oregon wildlife agents in a year-round program to make the parks less attractive to the geese — and reduce the amount of goose droppings under visitors’ feet.
