GIG HARBOR, Wash. (AP) — The Pierce County sheriff’s office says the man killed by a Tacoma police officer early Wednesday was supposed to be at work at the time.
Spokesman Ed Troyer says investigators are looking into why the 54-year-old man was driving on Highway 302 around 2 a.m. Wednesday.
The News Tribune reports his pickup truck was pulled over by the officer who was on her way home when she noticed it driving erratically. She had called for a Washington State Patrol trooper and was out of her patrol car when, Troyer says, the man got out brandishing a handgun.
The officer shot him. He was declared dead at St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor. Troyer says he has a history of drunken driving.
