COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) — A group of volunteers in Coos Bay are helping make sure that patients who need eye surgery get what they need from the Lions Eye Bank of Oregon in Portland.

The World newspaper in Coos Bay reports that Lions Club Secretary Phil Marler in Coos Bay is one of those volunteers in the Lions Club International Earth Angels program.

He’s always ready for a call to respond to get the eye tissue from the airport in Coos Bay to the hospital.

The Earth Angels program is the ground version of the Angel Flight West program, whose pilots volunteer time, planes and fuel to transport people for medical treatment, and even family funerals or bringing soldiers home.

The Earth Angels take over and drive people where they need to go.
