OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Timber from Washington forests is being used in China’s building boom and will likely help rebuild homes damaged by the big earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The Spokesman-Review reports the demand has made log exports a big part of the business at the Port of Olympia.

One freighter carries about 6 million board feet of timber. The port’s Jim Knight says that’s enough for about 430 Japanese homes.

For the year ending in May the port shipped 124 million board feet of logs.
