LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — The Breeders’ Cup has hired the president of Del Mar to be its president and CEO.

Craig Fravel begins his new job July 18. He replaces Greg Avioli, who resigned in March.

The Breeders’ Cup has expanded the past few years. It has added a second day of racing to its championships and a 15th race to an event offering $26 million in purses. This year’s Breeders’ Cup is at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4-5.

Fravel joined Del Mar in 1990 as a vice president and became president and general manager in 2010. Del Mar is one of the most scenic tracks, located north of San Diego and often referred to as where the turf meets the surf.
