JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — As far is Mexico is concerned, 17 players are more than enough to win the Gold Cup.
The director of the country’s national teams said Friday night that while Mexico would benefit from replacing the five players dropped from the Gold Cup squad after testing positive for the banned substance clenbuterol they really aren’t needed.
FIFA approved the move earlier and asked CONCACAF to implement it. Mexico is still awaiting a decision from the regional governing body.
Defending champion Mexico will play Guatemala on Saturday night in the second game of a Gold Cup quarterfinal doubleheader at the New Meadowlands Stadium.
Honduras and Costa Rica will kick off the opener at 5 p.m.
