Letter: Competency lacking

The Columbian
Published: June 17, 2011, 5:00pm

I am amazed at the many stories in June 14 issue discussing incompetent management. Thomas Sowell discussed it in his column, “Competency not a priority in Congress,” dealing with educational issues. The story “Marie Callender’s restaurants close abruptly” discussed what happened with the restaurants in the state. All stores closed at 3 p.m. Employees were not immediately notified, and the customers were not allowed to finish their meals. Upper-level managers blamed the economy for the need to file for bankruptcy, but why not let the customers finish their meals? If managers want good returns, they need to treat their employees well, who will in turn treat the customer well. That is management competency.
