NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific marine operations center opens July 1 at Newport.

The center and its 175 jobs were moved from Seattle over the objections of officials in Washington state.

A new pier for six ships and a warehouse and administration building were built at a cost of $30 million on Yaquina Bay.

The Register Guard reports the ships and all but 65 of the workers will remain at sea most of the time, conducting research. It’s unclear how many of the remaining 65 workers will move from Seattle.
