NEW YORK (AP) — Former Olympic runner Ray Flynn has been selected director of the Millrose Games.

The meet will be held next year at the Armory in upper Manhattan after many decades at Madison Square Garden. The games were originally set for Jan. 28 but will now be held Feb. 11.

Flynn said Tuesday the later date will give athletes a chance to produce performances leading to the 2012 London Olympics. He says he wants to “excite the new generation of younger athletes” about the Millrose Games.

Flynn competed for Ireland at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics. He ran a 3:49.77 mile in 1982 in Oslo at the Bislett Games.

The Armory is home to a year-round track and field center run by New Balance that hosts more than 100 meets a year.
