EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Researchers are studying some urban wetlands in Eugene to help preserve habitat and species.

The Register-Guard reports that several public agencies own land in the 3,000 acres of wetlands tucked among the big box stores and industrial buildings on the west side of Eugene.

Some of the land is held by federal agencies, some by the city of Eugene and some by the nonprofit Nature Conservancy.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced this month that it will develop a resource management plan for its 1,300 acres of west Eugene wetlands — one of the smallest plans in terms of acreage ever proposed by the agency.
