BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Two men were sentenced to life in prison Thursday for the 2009 murder of Romanian handball player Marian Cozma.
Cozma was stabbed in the heart during a fight outside a disco on Feb. 8, 2009, where he was celebrating with teammates from MKS Veszprem, one of Hungary’s top handball teams.
Two other players, Ivan Pesic of Croatia and Zarko Sesum of Serbia, were also seriously injured during the dispute in the Hungarian city of Veszprem.
Judges from the Veszprem County Court gave Sandor Raffael and Gyozo Nemeth life sentences, while another man, Ivan Stojka, was given a 20-year sentence for his role in the attack. Four other men were given shorter prison terms.
Cozma was a member of Romania’s national team.
