Springfield judge rules broken moped not a bike

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) — A municipal judge in Springfield has ruled against a man who argued that his moped was an electric bike, not a motor vehicle.

The Register Guard reports Judge James Strickland found Paul McClain guilty of driving with a suspended license. McClain had argued his moped is a modified bike, for which a license is not required.

In the ruling Wednesday, the judge noted the moped was missing a pedal, which means it could not be ridden like a bike.

Police ticketed McClain six times earlier this year for driving with a suspended license when they caught him on his motorized two-wheeler on Springfield streets.
