TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard has unveiled underground missile silos for the first time as it kicks off 10 days of military exercises, the country’s latest military show of force amid a standoff with the West over its nuclear program.

State TV broadcast footage Monday of deep underground missile silos, claiming that medium and long-range missiles stored in them are ready to hit targets in case of an emergency.

A Guards officer, who was not identified by name, said Iran has “numerous” underground missile silos.

The sites are seen as part of precautionary measures taken by Iran to fire at specified targets in case of a U.S. or Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities.

Israel accuses Iran of receiving assistance from North Korea to build such silos. Iran denies the charges.
