SEATTLE (AP) — Mount Rainier National Park rangers are warning climbers to avoid the Nisqually Glacier where unusually large avalanches have been reported in recent days.
Lead climbing ranger Stefan Lofgren says rockfalls this size typically occur once every five or ten years.
The Seattle Times reports huge rocks have been falling from the Nisqually Cleaver, a ridge at an elevation of 12,800 feet. The rockfalls have been throwing up clouds of dust and unleashing muddy ice flows.
