Mountain trail linking 2 S. Ore. cities proposed

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — A former Medford firefighter wants to create a mountain hiking trail linking Jacksonville with Grants Pass in southern Oregon.

Applegate Valley resident Dave Calahan says the trail would stretch about 20 miles along the ridge of the mountains between the Applegate and Rogue River valleys.

Most of the land along the proposed trail route is managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management or by timber companies.

Calahan told the Mail Tribune newspaper in Medford that all lands crossed by the trail would need the approval of the land owners or managers.

But so far, he says there is plenty of interest in the proposal.
