COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The USA Hockey Foundation is benefiting from Phil Kessel getting picked last in the NHL’s all-star draft.
The Toronto Maple Leafs forward donated $5,000 to the Brendan Burke Internship, USA Hockey announced Tuesday.
The yearlong internship, for college graduates interested in pursuing a career in hockey operations, was established in honor of the late son of Toronto GM Brian Burke, who worked with Miami (Ohio) University’s men’s hockey team and was killed in a car accident last year.
As the 36th and final player chosen at the all-star draft in January, Kessel gets to choose charities to split $20,000. Kessel, who beat testicular cancer when he was a rookie, said some of the money would go toward a cancer charity.
