PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture deputy secretary is visiting university campuses in Portland and Corvallis to talk about nutrition and a federal initiative called “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food.”

Kathleen Merrigan plans to visit Portland State University and Oregon State University Thursday afternoon.

The USDA says she’ll talk about efforts to reduce childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles through Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign.

She’ll also about the USDA’s “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” initiative, which emphasizes the need for what the agency calls a “fundamental and critical reconnection” between local food producers and consumers.

Merrigan will speak in Portland State’s Smith Memorial Student Union at 3 p.m. and in Oregon State’s Peavy Hall at 6:30 p.m.
