OLYMPIA, Wash. — (AP) — Lawmakers want to enhance campaign finance disclosure in the wake of the Moxie Media scandal during the 2010 elections.
The Senate on Thursday unanimously approved a bill sponsored by Sen. Craig Pridemore that aims to tighten regulations for campaign spending and political action committees.
The Vancouver Democrat cited Moxie Media, which created some 40 different political action committees during the 2010 elections and effectively concealed its campaign contributors, as one of many organizations trying to defraud voters.
The bill lowers the monetary threshold for reporting contributions to campaigns, imposes stricter naming requirements for political action committees and strengthens penalties for violations.
Supporters say voters deserve to know who is distributing campaign information and who is paying for it, and this bill clamps down on companies that intentionally mislead voters.
