ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Sugarinthemorning returned from a nearly three-month break to win Friday’s $68,288 feature for 3-year-old fillies by a half-length at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, Sugarinthemorning ran 612 furlongs on the turf in 1:13.42 and paid $8.20, $4 and $3. So Belle returned $5.20 and $3.40, while Teroda was another length back in third and paid $3 to show.
It was Sugarinthemorning’s first start since a fourth-place finish in a race at Hollywood Park on Dec. 9.
Her trainer, Hall of Famer Ron McAnally, says: “She lost a little weight and was getting a little nervous, so we decided to give her some time off. It seems to have worked.”
The victory, worth $43,680, increased Sugarinthemorning’s career earnings to $103,044, with three wins in six starts.
