SEATTLE (AP) — The U.S. Department of Defense says a soldier stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord died Thursday in Afghanistan.

Military Police Brigade Spc. Jason M. Weaver died of wounds suffered after insurgents attacked his unit with a roadside bomb.

The military says the 22-year-old grew up in Anaheim, Calif., and graduated from high school in 2007. He enlisted in the Army in January 2008 in Los Angeles and trained at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri before he was assigned to the Military Police Brigade at then-Fort Lewis in July 2008. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan last June.

The Department of Defense says Weaver has been honored with eight medals, a ribbon and a badge.
