OMG: Text lingo appearing in schoolwork

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — Teachers in Clark, Wash., say they’re seeing more texting lingo such as OMG and LOL appear in students’ school work.

The Columbian newspaper reports that preteens and teens used to text messaging are turning in written assignments that abbreviate words, omit vowels, begin sentences with lower cases letters and add smiley faces at the end of sentences.

Teachers say they aren’t alarmed by the texting slang, but they do make students correct spelling and grammar errors. They believe students do know the correct way to spell “you” and understand that LOL, which means “laugh out loud,” doesn’t belong in essays.
