LONDON (AP) — The British government hopes to increase the fines for people caught illegally selling tickets for the 2012 London Olympics.

Ahead of tickets going on sale on Tuesday, Home Secretary Theresa May announced that the fine for “touting” tickets is set to be raised to $32,300 from about $8,000.

May says that “by increasing the fines for touting we are sending a clear message to criminals and prospective criminals that it is not worth their while and they are not welcome.”

The Home Office says an amendment to the London Olympic and Paralympic Games Act will be put to Parliament “shortly.”
