KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Kyle McClellan tried to bolster his bid for a spot in the St. Louis rotation, pitching four innings Thursday in the Cardinals’ 2-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

McClellan gave up one run and three hits. A full-time reliever last year, he is trying to earn the No. 5 spot. The Cardinals need another starter after Adam Wainwright had season-ending surgery.

Derek Lowe threw four shutout innings for the Braves. He has not allowed a run in nine innings this spring.
