BROOKINGS, Ore. (AP) — Curry County commissioners say they’ll meet Sunday to start the work for government aid to help them rebuild the harbor at Brookings in the southwest part of Oregon.
County leaders announced the meeting plan as Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber and U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley toured the harbor Saturday, a day after it was badly damaged by the tsunami surges that rolled in from Japan.
Kitzhaber’s press secretary, Christine Miles, says local and state officials can’t yet put a price tag on the repairs. The damage is described as extensive, especially where commercial fishermen moor their vessels.
Typically, after events such as the harbor damage, local officials request a disaster declaration from state and federal leaders. Granting a declaration makes the local government eligible for recovery aid.
