ENTERPRISE, Ore. (AP) — Wallowa County commissioners have approved a compensation fund for Oregon ranchers who lose livestock to wolves.

The East Oregonian newspaper in Pendleton reports the Community Alliance Livestock Fund was approved unanimously on Monday.

The fund was proposed to commissioners by Dennis Sheehy, a rancher who grazes cattle in the heart of the Imnaha wolf pack’s territory in northeastern Oregon.

Supporters of the fund say they hope it will become a model for the rest of the state, which lacks a compensation plan.
