PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A grand jury in Portland, Ore., has returned a 23-count indictment against a 61-year-old man accused of seriously wounding a city police officer on March 6.

The Oregonian said Monday that Ralph Clyde Turner is charged with 12 counts of attempted aggravated murder, 10 counts of unlawful use of a firearm and one count of assault.

Officer Parik Singh remains hospitalized.

Gunfire broke out after police responded to a 911 call from Turner’s girlfriend, who said she feared he was suicidal and might take his life with pills.

Police say Turner fired one shot from a handgun through the security door of his girlfriend’s duplex and three more shots from a hunting rifle out the front window.

According to court papers, Turner told police after his arrest that he fired at officers, expecting them to shoot back and kill him.
