TOKYO (AP) — Japan has called off all soccer games in the country this month because of the devastation from the earthquake and tsunami.

The announcement was made Monday by J-League chairman Kazumi Ohigashi. Last weekend’s games had already been called off. So far, 41 games have been postponed with no date set for the resumption of play.

Ohigashi said he has spoken with the president of the club Vegalta Sendai and was told its stadium and facilities were in ruins and the players had disbanded.

Ohigashi said: “They’re struggling to live over there. It’s not about training or the game.”

Friday’s massive earthquake and tsunami are estimated to have killed at least 10,000 people.
