WILLITS, Calif. (AP) — Mendocino County authorities say a man suspected of stabbing four people died after leading police on a high-speed car chase.
Capt. Kurt Smallcomb says the suspect was pronounced dead after he lost control of his vehicle and struck a large oak tree north of Willits. An autopsy is scheduled later this week.
Smallcomb says the man is suspected of killing two people and injuring two others in Trinity County before fleeing in a sedan with Oregon license plates.
He says after the vehicle was spotted on Highway 162 near Willits, sheriff’s deputies tried to pull the driver over, but he sped away. Deputies pursued at speeds ranging from 60 to 90 mph before the suspect crashed.
Smallcomb says the man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.
